The Side of the Road
You are stuck at the side of the interstate.
Your car gave rapid blinks of check engine light.
The battery light flashed, and then nothing.
You pulled off onto the wide break down lane.
You got out of the car and walked a few paces away
to call for a tow.
The inconvenience of the breakdown
should have bothered you.
The dense high-speed traffic of the interstate
should have made you uneasy.
But, you noticed the broad lane of freshly mown grass
and the golden light of the summer evening.
Because you were with someone you love to be with.
Not just someone you love, but someone
you love to be with.
